Overview

On Medusa, even the ground is unreliable. The clans endure a world of shifting landmasses and hard industrial lives, with little patience for anyone who cannot keep up. There is scant comfort to spare, and still less inclination to offer it.

The Iron Hands take their recruits from these people. In the Chapter’s service, a damaged limb can be replaced with something stronger and a failing body stripped of another weakness. The doctrines are severe, but their first lessons were learned at home. A Medusan does not need a priest to explain that flesh can fail. He has seen what happens when it does.

History

Medusa’s clans have endured under traditions suited to Iron Hands recruitment. Little is done to soften conditions the Chapter regards as useful. Memories of betrayal and loss reinforce a culture in which a promise is trusted less readily than something built to withstand failure.

Military significance

The Iron Hands employ armour, mechanised forces and extensive augmentation. Recruits come prepared to accept pain and bodily loss; Chapter doctrine teaches them to replace the damaged flesh. Medusa keeps supplying men to an institution that measures improvement partly by how much of the original man can be removed.

M41 and M42 status

M42 · Era Indomitus

Rift-strained chapter world under cold-route pressure.

Rift disruption strains the routes serving Medusa. The world endures with its existing habits of self-reliance and suspicion, now given further practical cause.
