A pilgrim arriving on Ophelia VII enters a world where devotion has offices, armed guards and authority over his daily life. Processions pass between basilicas and reliquaries. Beyond them stand convent-fortresses, where the business of serving the Emperor includes learning how to kill in His name.
The world’s religious institutions can lend sanction to a campaign and send people to fight it. Their influence reaches men and women who have never seen its shrines. A declaration issued here may arrive at a distant front as an instruction to endure another assault, with the promise of salvation offered to those unlikely to survive it.
History
Ophelia VII’s religious standing grew into authority exercised through both the Imperial Creed and the institutions administering it. Its shrines and offices can demand obedience far beyond the world. The distinction between a civic requirement and an act of devotion is often of little use to the person required to comply.
Military significance
The Adepta Sororitas and the wider Ecclesiarchy draw personnel and influence from Ophelia. Religious sanction can turn a campaign into a crusade or a sentence of purification. Militias and other troops go to war under declarations that leave them little room to question the purpose of the order.
