Overview
The people of Krieg live beneath the ground their ancestors poisoned. Above the sealed settlements, the surface bears the damage of an atomic civil war. Below, children are raised among the institutions that will prepare them for service. There is no expectation that the debt incurred by the rebellion has been paid.
The Death Korps leave this life for siege lines on other worlds. Their home supplies men accustomed to masks, confinement and orders that allow little room for survival. A commander requesting Kriegan regiments knows they can be committed where losses will be severe. On Krieg, the machinery of recruitment continues after the ships have gone.
History
Krieg’s loyalists answered rebellion with atomic war. The counterattack poisoned the surface, and reconquest continued through roughly five centuries of fighting between hives during M40. Obedience was restored to a world whose inhabitants could no longer live as they had before.
The culture of penance survived the end of the civil war. Later generations were raised to repay treachery through service without an expectation of coming home. The obligation gave the damage a purpose its victims could be ordered to accept.
Military significance
The Death Korps specialise in siege work, trench assault and the methodical destruction of defended positions. Their formations operate under bombardment and in hazardous ground with an acceptance of casualties commanders have learned to rely on.
Cavalry remains useful for reconnaissance, pursuit and attacks where other means are unsuitable. The troops supplied for these roles come from a society organised to produce replacements. A high loss estimate changes the size of the requirement more readily than the willingness to meet it.
