Overview

The furnaces on Mars are older than the men feeding them. Along the assembly lines, workers attend machines whose workings they have never been permitted to learn. A fault brings a priest. He carries incense, diagnostic instruments and the authority to decide which part of the line must be replaced. The decision can include the worker.

Beneath the red deserts lie sealed engines and stores of knowledge that even the Mechanicus approaches carefully. Above them, the Ring of Iron builds and repairs the ships that keep the Imperium supplied. Terra sends orders across the void. The Martian synods consider them in their own time, under their own laws. Both worlds need the weapons to keep coming, and neither has forgotten the terms of their agreement.

History

Mars survived ancient calamities through sealed knowledge and a faith organised around machines. Its agreement with Terra brought ships and weapons into Imperial service without making the Martian priesthood an ordinary provincial authority.

Forge worlds across the galaxy acknowledge claims originating on Mars. The disputes over those claims concern doctrine and technical secrets as much as territory. Settling them can delay work on which a distant army depends.

Military significance

Skitarii, cybernetic forces and Titans give Mars armies capable of defending its interests directly. Its yards and weapons production sustain forces far beyond those armies. The specialists who maintain them are part of the supply requirement.

The Ring of Iron strengthens the defence of Sol and keeps warships in service close to Terra. Damage there would be felt at fronts with no means of replacing what stopped arriving.

M41 and M42 status

M41 · Pre-Rift

Forge-temple capital of the Mechanicus.

Mars remains the leading forge and doctrinal centre of the Mechanicus. Production continues on an enormous scale while internal disputes determine who may authorise it and which methods they are permitted to use.

M42 · Era Indomitus

Forge-temple capital sustaining Indomitus armament demands.

Indomitus demands draw heavily on Martian manufacture. Scarcity sharpens disputes over production and supply, while reports of recovered STC knowledge attract the attention of priests looking for an advantage they can keep.

Timeline

Forge synods expand shipyard output for renewed crusade demands.

Skitarii audit-musters are reassigned to protect Sol-adjacent fabrication chains.

Data reliquaries are sealed after disputed machine-visions spread through local noospheres.

Titanicus maintenance cycles are accelerated in response to widening war forecasts.

Mechanicus fleets mobilize for the sudden needs of a galaxy split by catastrophe.

Indomitus fabrication quotas become a devotional and political burden.

Martian magi classify several supply failures as strategic sins requiring correction.
