Overview

Much of Tallarn’s life is sheltered beneath its deserts. On the surface, distance is exposed and water has to be accounted for. A traveller who mistakes open sand for empty country may discover too late that other people have been moving through it unseen.

The Desert Raiders take these habits off-world. Their crews know how to use ground that offers an enemy little obvious cover, and how to leave a position before the return fire makes it a grave. Tallarn’s devastation taught its inhabitants to live with what remained. Imperial commanders have found plenty of further uses for the skills that required.

History

Environmental devastation forced Tallarn’s people to organise around movement, shelter and the control of scarce resources. Those habits became a way of conducting war. The Imperium gained useful military practices from conditions that had made ordinary life harder.

Military significance

Desert Raiders employ mobile armour, ambushes and reconnaissance across country that can expose a static formation quickly. Their crews judge routes and opportunities from experience of arid ground. Leaving a position at the right time can preserve a force that a more rigid order would leave to be destroyed.

M41 and M42 status

M41 · Pre-Rift

Desert world with armored raider traditions.

Tallarn supplies mobile Guard formations and specialists for desert warfare, serving in southern theatres and well beyond them.

M42 · Era Indomitus

Overrun by daemons within the Rift, then relieved; its Raiders ride to southern fronts.

Daemons invaded Tallarn when it was caught within the Great Rift. Guilliman’s Indomitus Crusade relieved the world, and many Desert Raiders regiments subsequently departed with it. The survivors’ skills found further demand along disrupted routes and unstable fronts.
