Overview

Valhalla’s cities shelter beneath the ice. Outside lies cold severe enough to make shelter a condition of life, and inside, survival depends on supplies being stored and shared under close control. The inhabitants retain a long memory of how nearly their world ended them.

The Ice Warriors leave those buried settlements for fronts where patience and deprivation are expected of infantry. They know how to hold a position through discomfort because much of their civilian life taught the same lesson. Commanders make use of that endurance. A soldier accustomed to going without can be ordered to go without for longer before anyone above him regards it as an emergency.

History

Catastrophes drove Valhalla’s people into underground cities. Stores, rationing and readiness became requirements that could not safely be abandoned in quieter periods. The military culture of the Ice Warriors grew from that survival economy.

Military significance

Valhallan infantry is valued for enduring cold, deprivation and prolonged defence. Commanders use its regiments on frozen and attritional fronts. The expectation that these soldiers can continue under misery makes them likely recipients of orders that impose more of it.

M41 and M42 status

M41 · Pre-Rift

Ice world with a hardened Guard tradition.

The ice-bound cities keep supplying Guard formations. Their population maintains the reserves and discipline on which both local survival and military recruitment depend.

M42 · Era Indomitus

Nihilus-dimmed ice world under strained musters.

Route disruption in Nihilus strains the tithe. Regiments depart where transport remains possible, with a growing chance that their world will receive no reliable account of where they arrived.

Timeline

Ice Warriors muster for off-world deployments through Ultima corridors.

Subsurface city reserves are audited after extended winter casualty reports.

Cold-weather regiments are reassigned to distant siege fronts.

Local defense reserves expand after xenos raid warnings.

Rift interference interrupts regular reinforcement schedules.

Nihilus classification reduces confidence in long-range command links.
