Overview
The jungle reaches the edges of Catachan’s settlements and does not become safer because people live nearby. Poison and predation are ordinary hazards. A patch of ground has to be understood before it can be crossed, and a mistake may leave nobody able to explain it to the next traveller.
The inhabitants have learned to survive without taming the world. The Imperium recruits the results. Catachan Jungle Fighters arrive at distant fronts with habits formed long before military training, and little patience for officers who mistake a neat map for knowledge of the ground. For some of them, an enemy that can be identified and shot is a comparatively straightforward problem.
History
Catachan’s population survived by learning the dangers around it and acting before those dangers could kill. Imperial recruiters found a continuing use for the resulting skills. The planet remains untamed while its survivors are taken to serve elsewhere.
Military significance
Jungle Fighters specialise in close terrain, tracking, demolition and ambush. They can turn hostile country against forces that understand it less well. Their manner often sits poorly with parade-ground expectations, but a commander needing men to return from difficult ground has reason to tolerate it.

Catachan continues to supply soldiers for campaigns in lethal environments. The settlements at home remain subject to the same conditions that trained them.

Indomitus demands keep its specialists in service across difficult fronts. Collecting the tithe remains hazardous, and losing experienced Catachans wastes skills another world cannot readily supply.
