Overview

Near the Eye of Terror, a ship’s arrival date can be harder to establish than its destination. Within it, the distinction may cease to matter. Realspace gives way to conditions under which a body, a landscape or a stretch of time can be altered by things that want to alter it.

The inhabited worlds around the Eye live with what comes out. Raiding fleets and armies find their way through, and the bastions watching the approaches must be ready whenever they do. The crews standing those watches can see the region on their instruments. Knowing where the danger lies has never told them when the next attack will arrive.

History

Fortress systems and quarantine routes grew around the Eye over millennia. Fleets, watch stations and the Inquisition worked to contain threats that could emerge at times of their own choosing. The security of the wider region rested heavily on the Cadian Gate continuing to hold.

Military significance

Renegade fleets, daemonic forces and raids emerge from the Eye, requiring permanent defences on the surrounding approaches. Men committed to those watches cannot be sent to another front without leaving a gap. An enemy needs only one such gap to turn a local failure into an invasion.

M41 and M42 status

M41 · Pre-Rift

Immense warp rift and source of repeated incursions.

The Eye remains a major source of incursions into Obscurus. Cadia and the surrounding bastions guard approaches that are never simply closed.

M42 · Era Indomitus

One end of the wider galactic wound.

The Great Rift joins the Eye to a much larger catastrophe. Defences built to contain a bounded threat face a galaxy in which many of the old limits have ceased to hold.

Timeline

Obscurus watch stations renew long-range quarantine patterns around the rift.

Navigator houses revise hazard tariffs for Eye-adjacent routes.

Raid vectors from the Eye force Cadian Gate reinforcements.

Inquisitorial interdiction lists expand across surrounding systems.

The region erupts into a crisis that redraws Imperial assumptions.

Navigators classify the Eye as part of a larger Rift-era hazard system.
