Overview
Espandor’s forests surround agricultural settlements and cities concentrated on its western continent. The trees are part of the world’s livelihood, but they have also concealed enemies after the armies hunting them believed the main war was over. On Espandor, the end of an invasion has not always meant the end of the killing.
The world has supplied food and recruits to Ultramar through a history of renewed attacks. Its later standing as a cardinal world adds another claim on the inhabitants’ service. A settlement can owe labour to the wider realm and devotion to its religious authorities while still having to keep watch over the woodland beside its fields.
History
Espandor’s older role combined food production and recruitment. It suffered during the Shadow Crusade, then faced later enemies in the same wooded country. Tyranids left after the First Tyrannic War survived among its forests until a cleansing operation helped establish the Ultramarines’ Tyrannic War Veterans.
Military significance
Guilliman’s Spear of Espandor counterattack broke Nurgle’s occupation during the Plague Wars. The operation struck reinforcement networks and destroyed plague engines, weakening the enemy’s ability to keep its forces in the field. Recovering the world was part of a campaign extending beyond its ground.
M41 and M42 status
Imperial cardinal world
Espandor remains Imperial, with ork invasion among its later recorded conflicts. Its forests have repeatedly made the survival of an enemy difficult to rule out.
Recaptured during the Plague Wars
Imperial forces recapture the planet during the Plague Wars. The recorded victory does not establish complete reconstruction of its cities and farms, or a return to the former population.
Timeline

Ultramarines eliminate a surviving Tyranid nest.
The Spear of Espandor counterattack retakes the world.
