Overview
Battlefleet Gothic returns to Port Maw for work that cannot be done during a voyage. Guns need ammunition, machinery needs repair and depleted crews need people to fill the vacant stations. The naval complex has to prepare ships for wars spread across an entire sector.
Accounts disagree over the body beneath its installations. Some describe an artificial, hollow construction; later depictions show a conventional planet. The docks are less ambiguous in their purpose. Whatever shape their foundations take, they must keep the fleet supplied. During a blockade, a fortress can remain intact while the vessels depending on it run short elsewhere.
History
Heresy accounts describe a hollow artificial body developed into a naval base during the Great Crusade. Later illustrations show a conventional planet. The sources agree on the naval role more readily than the shape of the place performing it.
Military significance
Battlefleet Gothic commands and supports its operations from Port Maw. Dense defences helped preserve the base during the Gothic War, but could not prevent a long Chaos blockade. The installations remained standing while their ability to sustain distant operations was restricted.
M41 and M42 status
Headquarters of Battlefleet Gothic
Port Maw survived Abaddon’s Twelfth Black Crusade. Its endurance under blockade is recorded; capture by the enemy is not.
Later local condition unverified
The cited material gives no complete report of post-Rift damage or fleet strength. The population above 200 billion belongs to an older hive-world account. The relationship between the depicted planet and artificial installation also remains unresolved.

The Gothic Sector map and indexed background place Port Maw within its namesake subsector in Obscurus.
The regional identity is supported but this galactic point is uncalibrated. Conflicting physical depictions are a separate issue.
