Overview
Praetoria’s merchant shipping carries the wealth of a hive world situated near Bakka. Most of the people who create that wealth live under rationing and penalties designed to keep them at work. The prosperity is real; it is concentrated well above the factory floors.
Military service takes recruits from those hives into formations held together by exacting discipline. Praetorian regiments are expected to remain orderly under fire, even when the men beside them begin falling. The world has become known through such distant service. A battle that destroys one of its regiments can enter the Imperial record long before anyone troubles to describe the district from which the dead were taken.
History
Much of Praetoria’s recorded history follows its regiments abroad. The XXIV suffered at Big Toof River on Montar VII. The losses belong to a force fighting on another planet and do not establish that its recruiting world was itself overrun.
Military significance
Praetorian training insists on order under fire and cohesion during defence. Recruits from the hives learn to remain in formation while casualties reduce the men available to hold it. The regiments’ reputation has travelled farther through Imperial accounts than detailed descriptions of their home system.
