Overview
Terra’s oceans are gone. Habitation blocks fill the old seabeds, their foundations buried beneath centuries of further construction. Down where the light fails, families live and die within a few streets of the manufactoria that own their labour. Pilgrims spend everything they have to reach the Throneworld. Those who survive the voyage join queues that scarcely move. When someone dies, the people behind them step over the body. They have waited too long to lose their place.
Above them rises the Imperial Palace, its walls defended by weapons capable of levelling the districts below. Within, the Emperor endures upon the Golden Throne, sustained by a daily sacrifice whose victims arrive under guard. Beyond the Palace, the ministries work through another shift. Regiments are requisitioned. Food shipments are diverted to higher-priority worlds. A petition describing a famine waits beneath several metres of unanswered correspondence. By the time a clerk opens it, the governor who signed it has been dead for thirty years.
History
Unification and the Great Crusade made Terra the centre of an empire. The civil war that followed brought that empire’s armies back to its birthplace. Ten millennia of further building have covered the remains without removing them from the foundations.
By late M41, the Throneworld depends on supplies drawn from across the galaxy. Its defences can meet an invasion with extraordinary force. They cannot make a missing food shipment appear at the docks.
Military significance
The Custodes guard the Palace within defences supported by the Imperial Fists, Solar fleets and vast numbers of mortal troops. Inquisitorial scrutiny reaches through the mobilisations. A soldier assigned to Terra serves a position he has been taught must survive regardless of what happens to him.
The Astronomican gives distant Navigators a means of finding their way. Its defence concerns ships whose crews will never come close enough to see the world sustaining their course.
M41 and M42 status
Throneworld under eternal guard.
The Palace remains guarded and the Throne continues to command the Imperium. Keeping Terra supplied takes resources from worlds with claims of their own. Those claims are considered elsewhere in the queue.
Sanctus anchor straining beneath Rift-era isolation.
Terra anchors Imperium Sanctus after the Great Rift. Orders still leave the Throneworld, but disrupted routes and broken communication mean some of the people expected to obey them cannot be reached. Silence fills gaps the ministries continue to record as Imperial territory.
