Overview
Vigilus is a sentinel world whose importance is geographical before it is sentimental. It sits where passage, supply, and military ambition can be throttled by control of one hard point.
Its population lives under the logic of a gatehouse. Every warehouse, orbital gun, and command bunker is part of a larger argument over who may cross the dark.
History
Before the Great Rift, Vigilus was important. After the Rift, importance became crisis. Routes that had once been useful became vital, and vital places attract every power that understands maps.
Its recent history is therefore a compression of the wider era: invasion, relief, contest, propaganda, and the knowledge that a corridor can be worth more than a sector.
Military significance
Vigilus draws Imperial Guard, Astartes, Mechanicus, naval, and irregular forces because control of it affects movement through the Rift's scarred geography. It is a fortress by necessity and a battlefield by invitation.
The world is strategically significant as a lock. Locks are not glamorous. They decide who starves.
M41 and M42 status

The Great Rift opens; the Nachmund Gauntlet forms through it and Vigilus becomes the sentinel of a suddenly essential passage.
Multiple war fronts converge as passage control becomes critical.
Emergency convoys are prioritized through Vigilus-linked routes.
Imperial commanders continue treating Vigilus as a strategic lock.
