Overview

The air outside Armageddon’s hives can kill a man before an enemy finds him. Convoys cross the wastes under armour, passing refineries that have been repaired through successive invasions. Their output is needed at the front. So are the people who work in them.

War has become a permanent claim on the planet. Each invasion leaves fortifications to maintain, districts to reclaim and another generation raised within reach of a gun emplacement. The Steel Legion knows the roads through the poison and ash. When the fighting returns, its columns go out along them again. Behind the armoured carriers, the hives keep producing replacements for vehicles and soldiers alike.

History

Repeated invasions have left Armageddon with further layers of fortification and a population for whom military emergencies are familiar. The great ork wars fixed its name in accounts of planetary attrition.

Its older identity was deliberately concealed. After the War of the Beast, the Mechanicus moved Ullanor Prime to the edge of Segmentum Solar, faked its destruction and allowed it to be colonised as Armageddon. The later inhabitants went to work above a history withheld from them.

Military significance

The Steel Legion fights through toxic country in armoured vehicles, keeping infantry moving between positions the open air makes difficult to hold. When invasion grows beyond the world’s strength, other Guard formations, Astartes, Titans and naval forces are drawn into the fighting.

The industry that equips the defenders would also be valuable to an occupier. Armageddon has to be defended partly because so much effort has already been put into making it useful.

M41 and M42 status

M41 · Pre-Rift

Contested hive world scarred by major ork wars.

The world remains fortified and productive amid continuing war. Factories work close enough to damaged districts that the distinction between the front and the industrial rear offers limited reassurance.

M42 · Era Indomitus

Still militarized, toxic, and strategically overburdened.

Disrupted supply places further pressure on the surviving hives. Their output is still needed, while the forces defending them have fewer reliable means of obtaining what the planet cannot provide.

Timeline

War of the Beast: after the ork empire falls, the Mechanicus teleport the stripped Ullanor Prime to the edge of Segmentum Solar, later re-colonised as Armageddon.

Industrial tithe orders increase refinery and armored vehicle quotas.

The First War for Armageddon: Khorne cultists and the daemon primarch Angron with his World Eaters ravage the hives before the invasion is contained.

Hive militias are folded into larger planetary command schedules.

The Second War for Armageddon: Ghazghkull's first great WAAAGH! is broken in the ash wastes and refinery fields.

The Third War for Armageddon reignites; commanders classify the planet as a standing theater rather than a settled rear world.

Post-Rift supply gaps make every surviving forge stack more valuable.
