Overview

Balhaut’s memorials record a victory that killed the man who won it. Warmaster Slaydo defeated Nadzybar here and died of his wounds, leaving the crusade to Macaroth. For the soldiers who survived, the change in command came before the war was finished.

The damaged world became a place for administration and recovery behind the front. Convalescent troops arrived among buildings still being rebuilt, while the Commissariat continued its work. Distance from the main fighting made Balhaut useful. It did not make it safe from enemies capable of entering without an army, or from a crusade that still needed the wounded fit enough to return.

History

Slaydo defeated Nadzybar on Balhaut in 765.M41 and died from his wounds. Macaroth inherited the crusade. Gaunt’s service there became part of a personal history attached to a battle whose consequences reached far beyond the world.

Military significance

A Commissariat headquarters and recovering regiments made Balhaut useful behind the front. In the Blood Pact campaign, enemy infiltrators targeted Mabbon Etogaur, a prisoner whose knowledge could alter the wider war. The world’s support role gave an enemy reasons to enter it covertly.
