Overview

The nalwood forests of Tanith shifted enough to make a good sense of direction a necessity. People lived by those woods and worked their timber, carrying skills and customs that belonged to a place a stranger could easily become lost in. The soldiers recruited there took that familiarity into the field.

They had scarcely begun their service when Tanith was destroyed. Gaunt took away the men he could save. They became the First and Only, with a name that preserved both their home and the fact that no further regiment would follow them from it. Their later skill at finding a way through unfamiliar ground did not offer them a route back.

History

Gaunt arrived to organise new regiments as a Chaos force reached the system. He evacuated the soldiers he could take while the attackers destroyed Tanith. The regiment that survived carried resentment as well as grief: the order that saved its men had also taken them away from their home’s last battle.

Military significance

The Ghosts’ woodland skills became valuable in scouting, stealth and reconnaissance across the Sabbat crusade. They learned new battlefields without a recruiting world able to replenish them in the old way. Their service records concern an army in exile, not a continuing Tanith garrison.

M41 and M42 status

M41 · Pre-Rift

Destroyed during the Sabbat Worlds Crusade

By late M41, Tanith is destroyed. The forests described in earlier accounts belong to the world before the Loss; the First and Only carries their memory into service elsewhere.

M42 · Era Indomitus

Historical lost world; no restoration established

No restoration is established. The destruction precedes Indomitus by centuries, and the original Ghosts’ survival into M42 is unconfirmed. Later remembrance does not demonstrate a recovered planet.

Timeline

Tanith exports nalwood and raises local militia.

Chaos destroys Tanith during its regiments' founding.

The surviving First and Only serves in exile.

Chart placement and sources

Provisional placement

The viewed second-edition limited-edition Sabbat Worlds map places Tanith in the crusade region.

The local map uses rimward orientation, not a verified north-up galaxy frame. Membership supports this point within the Sabbat marker; its exact internal offset remains illustrative.

Source-reviewed regional estimate in the existing 0–1000 chart. The retained galaxy anchors, exact point and any ring size are not surveyed coordinates or territorial boundaries.
