Overview
The warriors sent down to Isstvan III believed they were suppressing a revolt. Horus had selected them because their loyalty was in doubt, and intended to kill them with the population below. Virus bombs and the firestorm that followed were meant to complete the purge before it could become a battle.
Saul Tarvitz’s warning gave some of the condemned time to find shelter. They emerged to fight the commanders who had sent them there, prolonging a betrayal that was supposed to leave no organised survivors. The ruined world records that resistance as well as the slaughter. It is a different grave from nearby Isstvan V, where the next loyalist force would be destroyed.
History
Horus sent suspected loyalists from the Sons of Horus, Emperor’s Children, Death Guard and World Eaters into the planetary revolt. Tarvitz’s warning let some reach cover before virus bombing and firestorm could finish them. The purge became a prolonged ground war.
Military significance
Survivors fought among the ruins while Garro escaped aboard the Eisenstein to carry warning to the Imperium. Later tradition associates the world with Rylanor’s defiance of Fulgrim. The acts of resistance continued after the destruction that was supposed to make resistance impossible.

Dead and quarantined
Isstvan III is barren and quarantined. Accounts of its population and wartime forces do not provide a living census or a present garrison.
Dead; no inhabited recovery established
No inhabited recovery is recorded. Isstvan III and V share a system but mark separate betrayals: the purge within Horus’s own forces and the later massacre of the loyalist expedition. A continuing modern campaign is not established.

The two Isstvan markers represent planets of one system. Their small separation is for selection, not interstellar distance; the exact eastward placement remains uncalibrated.
