Overview
The Legions landing on Isstvan V expected reinforcements to help finish the attack on Horus. The Iron Hands, Salamanders and Raven Guard had committed themselves when the forces arriving behind them revealed whose orders they were really following. The battlefield closed around the troops already on the ground.
Ferrus Manus died there. Survivors escaped into pursuit and scattered resistance, leaving formations so badly damaged that their later wars had to be fought with whatever could be gathered. The massacre did not kill every member of the three Legions. For the men left alive, that distinction was the beginning of the work still required of them.
History
The Iron Hands, Salamanders and Raven Guard attacked the Legions already in open rebellion. The Night Lords, Iron Warriors, Word Bearers and Alpha Legion arrived as supposed reinforcements, then attacked the loyalists from behind. Ferrus Manus died in the disaster, leaving survivors to escape a battlefield held by forces they had expected to trust.
Military significance
The massacre wrecked the formations committed to the landing without eliminating every unit of the three Legions elsewhere. Survivors formed parts of the Shattered Legions. Corax’s Raven Guard endured pursuit on the world, and later Scouring operations returned to its defences.

The two Isstvan markers represent planets of one system. Their small separation is for selection, not interstellar distance; the exact eastward placement remains uncalibrated.
